What Happens When I Travel Solo

March 6, 2016
You know, I've always been that kid that is terrified of airplanes. Yet, I am also that kid that studies abroad and has to travel by themselves 100% of the time. I still get petrified whenever I'm on board but, I know I'm not the only one. Today, I wanted to share my tips on how to make your flight more smooth, in lieu of Spring Break since I am back home for the break (and had to actually travel in an airplane), so you get a look into what I do whenever I travel by myself!

+ Try to keep all of your necessary/essential documents in one target place. This saves a lot of time and you reduce the stress and anxiety of losing a document or missing it and not finding it quick enough and making other people wait.

+ Invest in one of those travel pillows if your flight is +2 hours long. I've come to realise that, beyond being super conscious and scared in the plane, there is always that one moment where I really try to chill and having a comfortable cushiony place to lie your head for the rest of the flight is really convenient.

+ Don't skip over buying that one magazine. I always find it so worthwhile to buy magazines because, perhaps I won't read them during the flight (because I'm so anxious) but, the travel time afterwards and the waiting time before boarding is so tedious; magazines make it go really fast.

+ Dress light, comfortable, but don't forget something to keep you warm. It doesn't matter where you go, always bring a scarf or hoodie. I always think that airports and airplanes are really cold, so I keep one of those with me every time.

+ Travel light so you don't have to carry a bunch of things when you land. What I mean is, try to minimise your luggage into a small carry-on bag. It's a whole lot easier and much more minimalistic.

+ If you can avoid it, stir clear of airport restaurants (or eating in the airport). You all know why. It's hella expensive.

+ Learn the basic travel rules so you don't get stopped at TSA. Those include (1) don't carry liquids, (2) don't carry anything that has more than 4oz of liquid or compact product, (3) avoid traveling with jewellery if you can help it, (4) take your laptop out of your backpack/case when it's about to go into the scan, (5) pretty obvious but don't carry drugs, etc. It makes you super happy whenever you don't get stopped by TSA, honestly.

+ It's okay to call mom (or someone) if you feel lonely or lost. You're by yourself in an airport, for crying out loud. It's always nice to feel reassured that you're in the correct place, at the correct time, going to the correct destination.
